Fairy Tale
Trials History Each year we have presented a mock
trial to the fifth grade school students in the county, based on a
fairy tale. We began with the prosecution of Goldilocks for the burglary
of the Bear home. Our next endeavors were dependency proceedings regarding
Snow White, followed by a criminal prosecution of B.B. Wolf for the
homicide of two pigs and the attempted homicide of the third. Next
we prosecuted a celebrity homemaker, Marsha Stewart, for Kidnapping
and Terroristic Threats perpetrated in her Stroudsburg home on Hansel
and Gretel. The next two years marked a departure from the traditional
fairy tale theme when in two consecutive years we explored negligence
and breach of contract claims brought by Darth Vader against Boba
Fett in connection with Boba Feet's failed kidnapping of Han Solo.
One year, we prosecuted Robin Hood for Robbery and Conspiracy and
another year; the Emperor sued his tailor for a defective new suit.
In 2004, we departed again from the fairy tale theme in favor of Harry
Potter and the issue of product liability. In 2005 and 2006, the theme
was based on Harry Potter and a criminal assault/self defense. We
have found the fifth grade children understand a criminal trial better
than one based on a civil complaint. Each year, a group of children are
selected to act as a jury. At the end of the trial, time is allotted
for the children to ask questions to the presiding judge. 1996-Comm
